Kirk will review the many types and applications of Smart Data that help us to explore, exploit, control, and conquer the big data flood, including the hyper-data avalanche soon to come from the Internet of Things (IoT). He will highlight implementations and implications of smartness in semantic data, linked data, knowledge graphs, formal and informal meta-tagging, machine learning, deep learning, cognitive analytics, automated data-storytelling, and the contextual 360 view from the IoT.


Dr. Kirk Borne is the Principal Data Scientist at Booz Allen Hamilton (since 2015). He previously spent 12 years as Professor of Astrophysics and Computational Science at George Mason University where he taught and advised students in the Data Science degree programs. Before that, he worked 18 years supporting NASA projects in various roles, including Data Archive Project Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope and Program Manager in NASA’s Space Science Data Operations Office. He has a PhD in Astronomy from Caltech and a BS in Physics from LSU. He has been consultant and adviser to numerous organizations, focusing on the use of data for discovery, decision support, innovation, and value creation across many different domains and industries. He is an active contributor on social media, where he has been named consistently among the top worldwide influencers in big data and data science since 2013.
